The Tottenham Hotspur defender has rarely been used this season.

Tottenham's Kevin Wimmer looks dejected

For a time this season Tottenham Hotspur fans were struck by the curious case of Kevin Wimmer.

After all, the Austrian international looked superb when he filled in for the injured Jan Vertonghen last season but despite appearing to be fit, Wimmer was overlooked for the match-day squad time and again.

Tottenham's Kevin Wimmer reacts

When Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino addressed the situation, he explained that teenager Cameron Carter-Vickers had impressed to such an extent during pre-season that he had pushed Wimmer down the pecking order. Yet while that sheds light on the situation, how long will the 24-year-old be prepared to sit and wait for chances if they are few and far between?

When Wimmer was regarded as third choice centre-back he would have known the chances would come as a result of injury, suspension and squad rotation. However even when Tottenham changed things up against Sunderland earlier this season, it was Eric Dier who partnered Toby Alderweireld in the centre with Vertonghen switching to the left.

Wimmer only recently put pen to paper on a new long-term deal at Tottenham, so suggesting he is heading off any time soon would be foolish.

The question is: How long will the player be happy to sit out match after match, not even getting on the bench despite showing he is more than ready for regular Premier League football?
