Nobody can doubt that Rangers man Carlos Pena is a man in form.
The Mexican scored twice in the 3-0 win at St Johnstone on Friday night to make it four goals in his last six games for the Gers which, for a midfielder, is a fine return.
The good news is that Pena, at the moment, looks on the road to justifying his £2.2 million transfer fee. The bad news is that goal-laden spells are nothing new for him and if last season is anything to go by then it could go very wrong.
The former Guadalajara man had six goals in nine games for the Mexican top-flight side during the 2016 campaign, making him one of the club’s most in-form players between March and May of that year.
However, the 27-year-old, who has 19 caps for Mexico, only managed one goal in his final 17 games of that season. According to the stats, Pena, who was loaned to Liga MX rivals Leon after his goalscoring form ended, went off the boil in a big way and it remains to be seen whether the same happens at Rangers.
In terms of general performances, the Pedro Caixinha signing seems to blow hot and cold and Rangers fans shouldn’t be surprised if the well runs dry again this season for a lengthy period.
