Louis van Gaal admitted this week to BBC Sport that he regretted choosing to manage Manchester United ahead of Tottenham Hotspur.

Spurs approached Van Gaal in 2014 and were snubbed before turning to Mauricio Pochettino.

Van Gaal says he realises now that Tottenham were a better project to take on.

He said: “Tottenham were a better selection because Manchester United were an old team and I knew I would have to transform them. Was it the wrong choice? Maybe, but I follow my heart.”

These are comments that Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy must build on this summer when holding talks with transfer targets.

Tottenham cannot pay the salaries clubs like Manchester United, Liverpool or Manchester City can.

They do not have the recent silverware either side do either, nor Liverpool’s history.

What Tottenham do have, is a team set up for success. If a player wants to win now, they should not dismiss the North London side.

Louis van Gaal looks on during the Final of the UEFA Women's Euro 2017 between Netherlands v Denmark at FC Twente Stadium on August 6, 2017 in Enschede, Netherlands.

They should look at a team which is on the cusp of success, is steadily improving each year, and is close to reaching the next level.

Van Gaal thought United’s name was a shortcut. Several players have done the same, and been proven wrong. Toby Alderweireld may even make the same mistake this summer.

Daniel Levy must take note of the comments made by the man who led Ajax to the 1995 Champions League title, and use them to help sway any potential signings who are undecided.
