How could Leeds line up under Marcelo Bielsa?
Leeds United are linked with appointing maverick Argentine boss Marcelo Bielsa.
Bilbao newspaper El Correo reports talks are underway with Bielsa and are progressing well.
Bielsa is famed for his unorthodox tactical approach which has drawn intrigue wherever he has managed, and it has to be said, mixed results.
He created a 3-3-1-3 formation and it is one Leeds’ players would certainly take some getting used to.
Bielsa will certainly be bringing in his own players, but as an experiment, we have taken Leeds’ current squad and drawn up how they could fit into the formation…
Leeds have an XI who could be moulded to fit Bielsa’s formation, but there are a few square pegs in round holes.
The biggest test would be whether Stuart Dallas and Luke Ayling would be able to play the role of wing-backs moulded into midfielders, supporting both the defence and midfield.
Leeds’ biggest weaknesses are in central defence, where youngster Paudie O’Connor is drafted in to fill out the third centre back spot, while questions remain over whether Liam Cooper is good enough.
The Whites also lack natural wingers and Pablo Hernandez may be best rotated in and out of the attacking midfield role with Samu Saiz.
Leeds’ best goalscoring threat at the moment is Kemar Roofe and his versatility and movement may be ideal to lead the line in this formation, but more likely than not, the club will be bringing in a new striker this summer.
