Carmelo Anthony revealed that LeBron James once saved his life after he was caught in a strong ocean current during a trip to the Bahamas with Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union.
LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony have been close friends ever since the two entered the NBA in 2003. And their friendship went far beyond the basketball court.
The two would spend a lot of time together, and even vacation together. But one trip they shared led to a harrowing moment for Anthony that required LeBron’s intervention.

Carmelo Anthony would have drowned if not for LeBron James
During an Instagram Live session with Dwyane Wade in 2020, Carmelo Anthony recalled the terrifying moment he drifted too far from their boat while snorkeling during a vacation in the Bahamas.
What began as a relaxing day on the water quickly turned into a life-threatening situation that ended with LeBron James diving in to rescue him.
“That s— got me sweating thinking about that,” Anthony said, retelling the story while laughing through the memory.
He explained that the group had jumped off the boat to swim toward a nearby grotto, but that he decided to stay back “to see the last bit of the barracudas snorkeling and all that.”
Moments later, the current began pulling him farther away. “Then I look up, and the current is taking me in the middle of the ocean opposite from the boat,” he said. “It was my fault.”
“All types of s— was going on through my head. Then I look up at the boat, and I see ‘Bron jump off the boat like he’s MacGyver.
“He jumps off the boat into the water. He was bringing me back with one arm. He’s swimming with the other arm.”
Dwyane Wade, who was watching from the boat, backed up the story. “I’ve seen LeBron do a lot of amazing things on the court. Off the court, when he went and saved Melo’s life — that was special.”
Anthony added, “Yo ‘Bron, I appreciate that. You saved my life that day. Them little flippers wasn’t working for me.”
LeBron James’ heroics go beyond basketball
LeBron James, known for his leadership on the court, showed that same instinct in real life. He didn’t hesitate when his friend needed help, diving into rough waters to bring Carmelo Anthony safely back to the boat.
The moment, though private at the time, became public years later thanks to the candid conversation between the longtime friends.
For Anthony, it was more than just a story — it was a reminder of brotherhood. Having one of your best friends save your life can be a bonding experience that resonates for life.
So along with his MVPs, Olympic gold medals, and NBA titles, LeBron James can now add one more achievement to his legacy: saving a fellow NBA legend’s life.
