Jordan Spieth looks like a lost soul on the greens.

In his prime, he was the most electric putter on the planet. He’d sink long bombs from anywhere, aggressively looking to hole every shot on the putting surface. Now, he’s a shell of himself.

Spieth looks scared on the greens, consistently leaving birdie putts short. That’s far from his former self. His putting woes mean he’s playing with one arm behind his back, and it cost him a chance of contending at the PGA Championship at Aronimink.

In the week’s build-up to the Travelers Championship, Spieth was testing a LAB putter. But in the end, he decided to keep his blade in his bag. That proved to be the wrong call.

Jordan Spieth loses 2.6 strokes to the field with putting

After deciding to stick with his blade putter at the Travelers, Spieth was terrible on the greens during round one. He was the sixth-worst putter in the entire field, losing 2.6 strokes.

He finished his opening round one-over par, eight shots behind the leading Eric Cole. He’s T62 in the tournament after 18 holes.

Who do you think is the world's most overrated golfer?

Many big names have problems winning consistently…

This is becoming quite frustrating for supporters of Spieth. Every area of his game has clicked at some point this season, but he simply isn’t able to string all of these aspects together over the course of a tournament.

This time it was his approach play that served him well, but he wasn’t able to capitalize on the greens.

Jordan Spieth should put the LAB putter in his bag

Spieth’s decision to stick with the blade putter is beyond explanation. There’s very little reason for him to be sticking with the same equipment when he’s been struggling so much with his putting.

He clearly believes something needs to change. He wouldn’t have spent the week after the US Open testing different putters if he didn’t. But after a while, he decided to stick with the same one. Madness.

It doesn’t matter how the test results come back. Not really. It can hardly get any worse. If you go out there with a LAB putter and you putt poorly, then you’re in the same spot you were in with your blade, so no harm.

Instead, Spieth keeps teasing a change, then backing out of it, and in the meantime, his putting fails to improve.
