West Bromwich Albion pulled out of a deal to sign the Malaga midfielder in the summer.

West Bromwich Albion were linked with a move for Ignacio Camacho in the summer – could the Baggies renew their interest in January?

How is he getting on?

Very well, in fact. According to WhoScored.com, Camacho is the eighth best performing player in La Liga, and best outside Barcelona, Real and Atletico Madrid. The 26-year-old has already surpassed last season’s goal tally (two) by one and created another two.

Do West Brom still need him?

West Brom were desperate for a midfielder in the summer, and even took free agent Momo Sissoko on trial after failing to land one. The Malian was not given a contract, however, and a number of alternatives – notably Morgan Schneiderlin – have been linked in the meantime, although the Baggies could lose out on the Frenchman to Everton. It is somewhat peculiar, therefore, that according to technical director Nick Hammond, manager Tony Pulis pulled the plug on Camacho’s Hawthorns switch after taking the view that “the player was not going to provide what he wanted for the team”.

Can they get him in January?

Camacho was said to be on the verge of a new deal at La Rosaleda, however, nothing has been signed two months on. His current contract still has another two-and-a-half-years to run, leaving Malaga in a strong negotiating position. According to Spanish football expert Guillem Balague, West Brom’s deal collapsed after they refused to pay the Andalusians’ £18 million asking price up front. However, Camacho’s form since then may convince them to change their mind.
