How is he getting on?
January’s exodus [*cough* Winnall *cough*] has only increased Barnsley fans’ affections towards Scowen, with his uncompromising approach particularly endearing. The midfielder has played centrally, out wide and even at full-back this season, excelling all over.
Do Wednesday still need him?
They’ve arguably needed a player like Scowen for the past two seasons, with Sam Hutchinson’s appearances often limited. The Owls aren’t anywhere near as effective without the former Chelsea man in central midfield, with this season’s understudies lacking the combativeness of both he and Scowen.
Can they get him this summer?
Hero he may be, Scowen could soon turn to villain if he doesn’t end up signing the new contract offered to him. Having already turned 24, Barnsley won’t get a penny for the former Wycombe player should he choose to move on, and have no control over his next club – local rival or other. Scowen recently admitted a move to the Premier League would be life-changing and Wednesday could offer it if the rest of their campaign goes to plan.
Verdict: 7/10 – Wednesday could be an attractive proposition for Scowen, although potential Premier League interest and the fear of becoming the next Winnall – booed and missiled on his return to Oakwell – could put him off a move to Hillsborough.
