Newcastle United are reportedly interested in Hull striker Abel Hernandez, but is he actually better than what they already have in Dwight Gayle and Joselu?
Newcastle United are interested in signing Abel Hernandez from Hull City this summer, according to the Daily Mail, with the striker set to become a free agent.
Magpies manager Rafa Benitez is keen to strengthen the attack at St James’ Park and with finances limited currently under owner Mike Ashley, Hernandez could represent a realistic option.
A good move?
Hernandez has struggled with an Achilles injury this season and yet has still managed to score eight goals in 10 Championship matches for Hull.
The 27-year-old’s overall record for the Tigers is a respectable, yet unremarkable, 39 strikes in 110 outings. However, when that is limited to just the Premier League it drops to eight in 49.
It therefore takes Hernandez a little over six games to find the back of the net in the English top flight – which is exactly the same record that current Newcastle forward Joselu has in the division.
The Uruguay international would presumably be signed to improve what Benitez currently has upfront, which is why it should be a little concerning that his stats are worse than that of Dwight Gayle, who has scored 20 Premier League goals in 95 appearances at a rate of one every 4.75 matches.
