Let’s take a look at how Norwich City’s summer signings have started their careers at Carrow Road.
Alex Pritchard
Pritchard was Norwich City’s big summer signing and made his debut off the bench against Blackburn Rovers. He then missed the next four games with a strained stomach muscle before making his return as a substitute against Cardiff.
His first start for the Canaries came in the EFL Cup win against Everton and the ex-Tottenham man had an eventful full debut. He cleared Enner Valencia’s strike off the line and played a role in Steven Naismith’s goal, as Norwich went on to knock out Ronald Koeman’s Premier League side. Pritchard has only featured as a substitute since then.
Verdict: With Alex Neil’s side thriving in front of goal there is no need to rush the tricky winger back into the starting eleven. If Pritchard can put a run of games together, he will only add to Norwich’s potent attacking force.
Nelson Oliveira
Oliveira made his first Norwich start in the EFL Cup against Everton but only lasted 45 minutes. Following this, the Portuguese forward has made three late appearances of the bench, including the wins over Burton Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers
Verdict: Oliveira’s late cameo’s suggest he will be a useful squad player over the course of this long Championship season.
Sergi Canos
Canos arrived from Liverpool in the summer and made his debut in Norwich’s home win over Bristol City. The Spaniard replaced Joshua Murphy on 61 minutes and missed a chance to add to the Canaries lead. Canos also made an appearance off the bench in the East Anglian derby but couldn’t help his side find a winner against Ipswich.
Canos then starred in Norwich’s 6-1 drubbing of Coventry in the EFL Cup. The midfielder netted twice to seal an impressive win for a young Norwich side. His performance meant he kept his place in the starting eleven for the Canaries trip to Birmingham City. He didn’t make the same impact and was subbed off as Norwich were handed a 3-0 defeat. Since then, Canos has only featured as an unused sub for the EFL Cup tie away to Everton.
Verdict: Canos is still a raw talent. Alex Neil will throw him in when his team needs a spark.
Michael McGovern
The Northern Irish international started the season on the bench with John Ruddy the preferred number one for the trip to Blackburn Rovers. An injury to Ruddy meant McGovern came off the bench for his debut in the goalless draw against Sheffield Wednesday. McGovern continued to impress and has kept his place in goal even with Ruddy’s return to fitness.
Verdict: After an eye-catching European Championship, McGovern is now proving himself to be a very good goalkeeper at this level.
Paul Jones
Jones signed from Portsmouth and has only made one appearance – starting in the EFL Cup win over Coventry City.
Verdict: Jones provides solid cover as Norwich’s third-choice keeper.
