Everton’s defensive record is currently their best ever in the Premier League.

Everton’s season under new manager Ronald Koeman has already seen two records broken. Not only have the Blues achieved their best ever start to the Premier League season after five games, the Toffees’ defensive record is currently their best ever.

After seven games, Everton have conceded just five goals – equaling a club record as their lowest ever total, matching Walter Smith’s first season in 1988.

After a disastrous last two campaigns under former manager Roberto Martinez, the Blues conceded a staggering 50 goals in 2014/15 and 55 last season. The Blues’ defensive record last term was the Toffees’ worst ever in the history of the club.

So what’s changed?

Ronald Koeman’s first job at Everton was to strengthen the Blues’ defence and that is something that the Dutchman has already accomplished. Koeman’s first signing was goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg, the 33-year-old surprised the critics by becoming one of the Blues’ best signings of the summer, already providing crucial saves that have prevented the Toffees from conceding.

Considering Koeman is a former defender himself, the Dutchman was always likely to start work at the back. After the departure of John Stones to Manchester City, Koeman acted fast in finding his replacement. The signing of Ashley Williams from Swansea was a top target for Koeman. Williams brings top-flight experience and leadership to Goodison Park.

Koeman’s defensive plan has clearly worked so far, the Blues haven’t conceded more than a single goal in any Premier League game this season. A remarkable record considering the shocking defensive record the Blues held last season.
