Confirmation by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon on Monday afternoon that Scotland would be entering a new lockdown prompted speculation as to how Scottish football would be impacted.

In the toughest restrictions imposed upon the country since March 2020, it has become compulsory for people to stay at home except for essential purposes.

The restrictions come into effect at midnight and will last for at least the remainder of January.

While the prospect of fans returning to stadiums seems a long way off, it appears that top-level Scottish football will be allowed to continue in its present behind-closed-doors format.

As reported by BBC Scotland Sports News Correspondent Chris McLaughlin, those “‘involved in professional sports, for training, coaching or competing in an event” will be allowed to leave their homes.

This should ensure a semblance of normality for SPFL sides, but it may be a different story for those at grassroots level.

In response to the First Minister’s announcement, the SFA confirmed that they will be liaising with the Scottish Government in relation to how grassroots football will be impacted.

With their side 19 points behind Rangers in the Premiership title race, Celtic fans have managed to get the term ‘Null and void’ trending on Twitter.
