Billy Donovan addressed the Chicago Bulls’ decision to release Jaden Ivey, focusing on team culture rather than directly engaging with the controversy.
The move came after a series of social media posts from Ivey sparked concern, culminating in remarks related to the NBA’s Pride Night initiatives.
While the franchise did not publicly specify the exact reason, the situation quickly became a major talking point.
Donovan was left to respond in front of the media. His comments reflected the organization’s broader values. And they made clear what the Bulls prioritize internally.

Billy Donovan outlines the Chicago Bulls culture after Jaden Ivey release
Speaking in comments shared by Jared Weiss on X, Donovan emphasized the standards within the organization.
“We have people from all different backgrounds inside the organization. This goes for players and coaches, everyone in the building. There has always been [a message] from the top: We’re all going to work well together. We’re all going to take care of each other,” Donovan said.
He added: “We’re going to accept each other. We’re going to be hardworking. We’re going to be accountable. We’re going to be respectful. We’re going to be professional. I think that’s kind of what it’s been.”
Donovan’s response avoided direct criticism but reinforced a clear message. The Bulls see culture and respect as non-negotiable standards.
Rather than focusing on one incident, he framed the situation around collective values. That approach highlighted how the team wants to operate moving forward. It also aligned with the organization’s decision to move on.
Billy Donovan addresses Jaden Ivey’s situation carefully
Donovan later addressed the situation more directly, while still choosing his words carefully.
“I know some of the things that have been out there, and I think it’s a situation for him where it’s on his own personal Instagram. I don’t want to get into what he put out there. But, certainly, I hope for him that he is ok,” the Bulls head coach continued.
He concluded, stating: “I’ve had conversations with Jaden and stuff, and he’s always been about rehabbing his knee and trying to get back on the court and trying to play.
“But I think, organizationally, there are certain standards I think we want to have as an organization and try to live up to those each and every day.”
The comments showed a balance between accountability and support. Donovan did not endorse the behaviour, but also did not publicly attack the player.
Instead, he kept the focus on standards and expectations. That allowed the team’s stance to be clear without escalating the situation further.
The decision ultimately reflects how seriously the Bulls view internal culture. Even without naming specifics, the message was understood.
