Let’s check in on those Watford players who left in the summer.
Matej Vydra
Vydra was deemed surplus to requirements at Vicarage Road and made reported club record switch to Nigel Pearson’s Derby County. His debut came in Derby’s 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United and Vydra has been part of a struggling Rams side. He has still managed two goals, so far this season, which came against Blackburn Rovers and his former team Reading.
Ikechi Anya
Anya followed Vydra to Derby and also made his debut in the defeat to Newcastle. He grabbed his first goal for the Rams when he capitalised on an Aden Flint mistake to earn a draw with Bristol City. The pacey Scottish international linked up brilliantly with Vydra to set up the Czech’s first goal for the club against Blackburn. Anya played the full 90 minutes in Derby’s recent win over Cardiff City and the draw with Reading.
Miguel Layun
Porto was the summer destination for Layun and he has made a flying start for the Portuguese giants. He scored in Rome as Porto recorded a memorable 3-0 victory over Roma to book a spot in the Champions League Group Stages. He has featured in seven league games for Porto and has already claimed four assists. Layun recently played in Porto’s defeat to Premier League Champions Leicester City.
Allan Nyom
Nyom moved to Premier League rivals West Bromwich Albion and the Cameroonian defender has immediately settled in. He came off the bench to make his debut in West Brom’s 4-2 win over West Ham and helped quell the Hammers momentum. Nyom’s performance saw him replace Brendan Galloway at left-back for Albion’s next two fixtures against Stoke and Sunderland. He gave a good account of himself on both occasions.
Almen Abdi
Abdi is another Watford player who has found it difficult dropping back into the Championship. He has played eight times for Sheffield Wednesday this season but hasn’t found the form which made him a favourite at Vicarage Road.
Jose Manuel Juardo
This summer, Juardo moved back to Spanish football in a deal that saw him reunited with ex-Watford manager Quique Sanchez Flores. Juardo has only appeared twice for Espanol this season – coming off the bench against Real Sociedad and Celta Vigo.
Sean Murray
Academy graduate, Sean Murray, made the move to League One side Swindon Town and has already made an impact. The midfielder grabbed assists against Bury and Bristol Rovers, before scoring in Swindon’s 3-1 defeat to Northampton Town.
Essaid Belkalem
Belkalem didn’t feature much during his time at Watford and this summer moved to Ligue 2 side US Orleans. The Algerian defender’s first game for his new team came in their 3-1 win over Strasbourg. The defender has since played in the defeats to SC Amiens and FC Niort.
Juanfran
Juanfran joined Juardo back in Spanish football and has, so far, enjoyed more success than his ex-Watford teammate. The fullback has played six times for Deportivo in their decent start to the season and recently helped them to a 2-1 win over Sporting Gijon.
Gabriele Angella
Following his release from Watford, Angella rejoined Pozzo owned, Udinese, and the defender has had a mixed return to Italian football. His second spell at the club began with a 4-0 thrashing by Roma. Angella was then brought on in the dying seconds of Udinese’s 1-0 win against AC Milan. Apart from these apperances, he has only featured as an unused substitute.
Joel Ekstrand
Ekstrand was a free agent for most of the summer, before deciding on a move to Bristol City. A hamstring injury has hampered his start to life at Ashton Gate and he has been limited to appearances off the bench.
