Newcastle United currently have more than a full squad’s worth of players currently away on loan.

With the season starting to reach the business end, Rafa Benitez may be starting to think about what he will do with some of the Newcastle players currently away from the club on loan when they return in the summer.

With that in mind, here is a look at the 14 players currently out on loan from the Magpies as well as a summary of how they are getting on…

Tim Krul

Tim Krul spent the first half of the season at Ajax, but joined their Eredivisie rivals AZ Alkmaar in January after failing to make a first-team appearance for the former. He has not had the best time with AZ, with just one clean sheet coming in nine appearances. He conceded 11 goals over two legs in a Europa League tie with Lyon also.

Siem de Jong

Siem de Jong’s injury-plagued spell at Newcastle was interrupted this season as he joined PSV Eindhoven for the campaign. In 15 league appearances, he has scored six and contributed one assist.

Henri Saivet

Henri Saivet undoubtedly struggled to make an impact following his move to St James’ Park last January, so it was no surprise that he joined Saint-Etienne. His time back in France has been fairly unspectacular, so it may not be out of the question to suggest that Benitez is unlikely to change his mind on him.

Emmanuel Riviere

Another player who failed to justify their move to Newcastle was Emmanuel Riviere. The forward joined Osasuna on loan this season, but is yet to register a goal or assist in 13 La Liga games.

Adam Armstrong

After a brilliant loan spell at Coventry last year, there was perhaps some surprise that Benitez did not keep Adam Armstrong amongst his squad this year and instead let him join Championship rivals Barnsley. He has done fairly well at Oakwell, scoring five and adding three assists for the Tykes. The amount of first-team football will surely help his cause upon his return.

Freddie Woodman

The highly-rated goalkeeper moved to Kilmarnock during the January transfer window, and has impressed with the Scottish Premiership side, making nine appearances in all competitions.

Kevin Mbabu

Kevin Mbabu is currently on loan at Swiss side Young Boys, where he has made eight top flight appearances.

Lubo Satka

Lubo Satka may not be a name that is too familiar to all Newcastle fans, with the defender yet to make a league appearance for the Magpies since joining in 2012 – though he did appear once in the FA Cup. He joined DAC Dunajská Streda in Slovakia in January, for whom he has made a couple of appearances.

Florian Thauvin

Florian Thauvin has been brilliant in Ligue 1 with Marseille, scoring 10 goals and contributing five assists. Unfortunately, Newcastle fans were not treated to such performances when he was with the club, and he now looks set to leave permanently (via Chronicle).

Cal Roberts

Cal Roberts is the second of three Newcastle players to have joined Kilmarnock in January. The forward’s spell has not been too successful with no goals coming in his first four games.

Ivan Toney

Ivan Toney’s loan at Scunthorpe is another that has arguably failed to really ignite. He has scored once in nine League One games, but the Irons are still doing very well in the third tier.

Sean Longstaff

Sean Longstaff is the third Magpie at Killie, and is perhaps doing the best of the trio. He has scored twice and contributed two assists for the side.

Alex Gilliead

Alex Gilliead has currently eight made first-team appearances for Bradford City, but is still awaiting his first goal for the League One high-flyers.

Macaulay Gillesphey

Macaulay Gillesphey has been a regular for League Two side Carlisle United this season, making 28 appearances for the Cumbrians.
