Real Madrid’s reported interest in Luke Shaw creates a big problem for Manchester United.
Real Madrid are reportedly interested in signing left-back Luke Shaw from Southampton and that creates a doubled edged problem for David Moyes at Manchester United.
United are one of the several sides to have been linked with a move for Shaw this season but should United go after him at the same time as Los Blancos, it could affect their chances of signing one of their back up targets.
“Real Madrid is pursuing wingback Luke Shaw – Both players (Adam Lallana involved in another rumour) have very high valuations, each around 30 million euros (£25m), the clubs interested have been warned,” said Sky Italia’s Gianluca Di Marzio.
Fabio Coentrao nearly moved to United last summer, with a deal not happening as Real Madrid couldn’t afford to lose him with no replacement coming in at the Bernabeu.
Moyes takes a big risk going after Shaw because if United are unsuccessful and if they create problems for the Spanish giants as they go after the highly rated teenager, they could be less willing to do a deal with United for Coentrao.
Unfortunately for United Coentrao’s current deal at the Spanish club doesn’t expire until the summer of 2017. Had he been a free agent, there wouldn’t have been a problem for Moyes going after Shaw as Coentrao would be free to move to Old Trafford if the Shaw plans fell through.
Should Real Madrid and United both go after Shaw, the Old Trafford side will subsequently be relying on good faith from Florentino Perez and Carlo Ancelotti to let them sign a player as an alternative option should the Bernabeu side land the Southampton star.
It’s a problem for Moyes and he has three choices; go after Shaw and risk missing on him and Fabio Coentrao, let Real Madrid have a clear shot at signing Shaw to land Coentrao or look at another left-back option altogether.
