In-demand midfielder Conor Hourihane is reportedly the subject of a bid from Sheffield Wednesday.
Conor Hourihane only has to take a step back and witness the fury of Barnsley’s supporters after Sam Winnall made the short trip across Yorkshire to Hillsborough to realise that it’s probably not the wisest decision to join his former team-mate at Sheffield Wednesday.
The Irish Sun reported on Tuesday that The Owls had a bid of £1.25 million rejected for one of the Championship’s standout players in 2016/17 but that is unlikely to convince Carlos Carvalhal, or Aston Villa boss Steve Bruce for that matter, that their time would be better spent pursuing other targets.
The 25-year-old, who has contributed a league high eleven assists from a deep lying playmaker role, is out of contract at the end of the season and rumours are rife that he could be handing over the captaincy and bidding farewell before the month is out.
And Hourihane could be forgiven for being tempted by an offer from a club just 16 miles down the road especially after Winnall, the recipient of so many perfectly weighted passes, made the move last week.
However, in a week where Dimitri Payet and Diego Costa have thrown tantrums befitting of a five-year-old in reported attempts to force a move, Hourihane has conducted himself with dignity and shown his club commendable respect despite the maddening speculation. He’s even made himself available for selection, would you beleive?
For the most part, Barnsley fans would understand if he wanted to further his career and make the move to one of the famous clubs he has been linked to.
However, if he wants to retain the respect of his loving fanbase, he will learn from Winnall and avoid arch-rivals Wednesday.
