Tottenham Hotspur produced a pretty toothless Carabao Cup final display in losing to Manchester City at Wembley on Sunday, it has to be said.
Pep Guardiola’s side only won 1-0 in the end but it could and probably should’ve been a far more grisly evening for Tottenham, who showed very little by way of attacking.
On the rare occasions when Spurs did get forward, it went horribly wrong and one moment with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Sergio Reguilon pretty much summed up their problems in City’s final third.
The Denmark international, a £15 million summer signing [Sky Sports], tried to tee up the Spanish left-back for a cross in what was a dangerous area.
Problem was, Hojbjerg passed it with the expectation that Reguilon would run on to it and he didn’t, prompting the former Southampton midfielder to lambast his team-mate after the ball trickled out for a City goal kick.
Here’s what Chris Sutton said to BBC Radio 5 Live: “What a waste. It was good play by Kane initially but it was a horror pass from Hojbjerg. If in doubt, blame your teammates.”
Aymeric Laporte’s header on 83 minutes was enough to separate both sides in terms of scoreline, but Tottenham – who had two shots compared to City’s 21 – are nowhere near the Sky Blues’ level today.
The scoreline doesn’t prove that, but the disparity in both sides’ performances absolutely did.
