Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ben Foster has been discussing and dismantling Joe Gomez after a horrific performance against Leeds at the weekend.

The centre-back was at fault for the opening goal of the game as a misplaced backpass allowed Rodrigo to tap into an open goal, and he never really settled after that.

Foster was giving out his ‘Chump of the Week’ award on his YouTube channel, and it’s not all that surprising to hear that Gomez was one of the nominees after his performance at Anfield on Saturday evening.

Chump of the Week

Foster gave Gomez a bit of a dressing down.

“First of all we’re going to go with Joe Gomez. That first goal against Leeds, it was a horrific backpass. He didn’t get his head up to see where Alisson was and it was an easy goal for Leeds. That’s a bad start for Liverpool 1-0 down and their backs were against the wall,” Foster said.

Setback

This may be a career-defining setback for Gomez.

It was only a couple of weeks ago that the defender was winning a Man of the Match award against Manchester City and it looked like he was going to earn himself a late call-up to England’s World Cup squad at one point.

However, after back-to-back poor performances against Nottingham Forest and Leeds, Gomez may be lucky to get another start for Liverpool this season.

Ibrahima Konate is now back from injury and Joel Matip won’t be far behind him, and after making such a mistake against Leeds, Gomez will surely be way down the pecking order, while his World Cup dreams are probably dashed too.

It’s such a shame because Gomez genuinely looked world class two or three years ago, but it seems as though injuries and a lack of confidence have taken hold and affected his game.
