Norwich City manager Daniel Farke told the Eastern Daily Press how he feared for Oliver Skipp’s career after the Tottenham Hotspur youngster was on the receiving end of a reckless tackle at Rotherham United.
The young Spurs midfielder joined Norwich on a season-long loan deal.
Skipp has quickly established himself in Norwich’s midfield, and he was heavily involved during the Canaries’ 2-1 victory over Rotherham at the New York Stadium.
Farke, however, feared Skipp’s loan spell was about to be cut short as Millers defender Angus McDonald committed a two-footed lunge on him, culminating in a red card.
“It was an horrendous scene. I feared it was the end of Olly Skipp’s loan spell. Perhaps the end of his career. If I am honest I was surprised that he could play further on. I am unbelievably grateful that it seems nothing serious has happened. There are some stud marks on his legs but Oliver seems to be in a good physical condition. I am just happy that after this scene Olly is able to play football,” Farke explained.
Skipp, 20, had struggled to break in at Tottenham, making just one Premier League start last season and a further six appearances coming off the bench.
At Norwich, the midfielder will be able to gain valuable first-team experience.
Skipp has started all five of Norwich’s Championship games so far, averaging an impressive 87.6% pass accuracy rate and 2.6 tackles per game.
The Canaries will set their sights on promotion this season. Skipp will be involved in high-pressure games, and the physicality of the Championship should toughen him up.
Skipp’s contract at Tottenham expires in 2024. He is very much a long-term prospect in North London, with Jose Mourinho dubbing him a future Spurs captain.
