Aston Villa fans have reacted to Jed Steer’s Twitter message after he posted about playing for the club during their friendly against Manchester United over the weekend.

Even though Steer started in between the sticks during Villa’s 1-0 win over United, it seems as though he will now be demoted to Dean Smith’s number three keeper.

BBC Sport have reported that Aston Villa are set to sign Arsenal keeper Emiliano Martinez for £20 million on a four-year contract.

Villa fans on Twitter are well aware that means Steer will be behind both Martinez and the currently injured Tom Heaton in the goalkeeping pecking order.

They made it clear that they are grateful for everything he has done for the club and they wish him the best of luck for the future – he is one of the club’s longest-serving players after being signed by Paul Lambert in 2013.

Steer’s standout moments in a Villa shirt came during their promotion campaign when he was perhaps their best player during the play-off games themselves.

In the semi-final first-leg against West Brom, he produced a simply stunning save to deny Jay Rodriguez from making it 2-0 at the time – Villa went onto win that leg 2-1.

He then took his game to another level by helping the club win a nerve-racking penalty-shoot out on their way to Wembley before remaining calm during the frantic dying moments of their play-off final win against Derby.

Villa fans have made it clear on Twitter that they will never forget what Steer has done for the club, as it’s now pretty clear that his future looks bleak.
