Some Newcastle United fans on social media have been reacting after they were linked with a move for Bayer Leverkusen defender Mitchel Bakker.

What’s the story with Bakker?

The Daily Mail claim that Newcastle have opened talks with Bayer Leverkusen over a deal to sign Bakker in what would be a permanent deal.

Newcastle have been working on improving their defence this month. They’ve already signed Kieran Trippier, while they’re apparently working very hard to bring Diego Carlos to the club.

Left-back is also seemingly another priority position. The Magpies have also failed with a move for Lucas Digne this month, but that hasn’t deterred them in their pursuit of a new left-sided defender.

Not proven

Bakker is seemingly a talented player. He’s played for two absolutely massive clubs in the shape of PSG and Bayer Leverkusen.

However, despite his brilliant pedigree, he isn’t a proven player at the top-level.

The 21-year-old could hardly get a game at PSG, while he’s only started 10 Bundesliga games this season.

At the age of just 21, he has a lot of room to grow, but Newcastle need players who can improve their team right now.

Fan reaction

However, in spite of Bakker not being a proven player, the St James’ Park faithful are very excited about the idea of him coming to the club.
