Ian Wright has claimed that if he is one of the players in the Newcastle dressing room then he will be hoping Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is their new boss, as he told the Kelly and Wrighty Show.

The former striker shared that everything Gerrard has done at Rangers has been ‘very, very impressive’.

On Wednesday, Newcastle sacked Steve Bruce and they are now looking for the Englishman’s replacement.

A number of names have been linked to the now expensive hotseat at St James’ Park, including that of Gerrard’s.

Gerrard won the Scottish Premiership title at Ibrox last season, and by doing so, he ended arch rivals Celtic’s dominance and their hopes of winning a historic ten titles in a row.

Wright shared that he would like to see Gerrard handed the keys to the Newcastle manager’s job, because he has ‘proven’ in Scotland that he has progressed.

“The more you think about it, the more you can see a Steven Gerrard going in there, in the way he conducts himself and the way he is,” said Wright. “How meticulous he is, in the way his team are going to perform and how organised they are.

“He is young enough. You say that Liverpool is the end goal and you could see that. If he got to Newcastle, he got them through this period and they started to get that money, then they started pushing up the league. It is a job that you probably say ‘can I take Newcastle to the promised land and win the Premier League? Get to the Champions League?’

“Then you still end up going to Liverpool, after you have done that because whoever gets Newcastle to that place there will be no way a shortage of managers who will want to take that job at that point.

“Steven’s proven. He has played his way through a certain time at Rangers, where it wasn’t going great and he had to build it in. If I am a player, in that dressing room, and you see that list, that is the name I am hoping for. I hope it’s him. Everything he has done at Rangers so far has been very, very impressive.”

The issue facing Newcastle’s new Saudi-led owners, at this moment in time, is that they are in a proper relegation scrap.

So, not only do the club have to look towards the short-term and fix their current issue, but eyes are also on the future and all the money they can throw at the club.

But if they do go for that high-profile manager, will that said person want to have to deal with a relegation battle?

Either way, these next few calls by those now running the St James’ Park ship will have huge bearings on where the club ends up during these next eight or so months.
