Hansi Flick has reiterated his desire to keep Thiago Alcantara at Bayern Munich amid claims that the Spain international is on the verge of joining Liverpool, in quotes reported by The Metro.
While Jurgen Klopp might have played down the suggestion that the Merseyside giants could follow up their first ever Premier League title with a serious summer splurge, all-but ruling out a deal for Kai Havertz, it seems that the chance to sign a seven-time Bundesliga champion for just £35 million is an opportunity that cannot be missed.
Thiago has just one year left on his contract at the Allianz Arena.
With reports suggesting he wants a fresh challenge at the age of 29, Sport claims that negotiations over a move to Liverpool are now very much advanced.
In fact, they go as far as to suggest that the agreement between Thiago and the Reds is ‘done’, with Klopp a huge fan of a metronomic midfield maestro he came up against on multiple occasions at Borussia Dortmund.
Klopp’s gain, however, would most certainly be Flick’s loss – and the Bayern boss knows it.
“I hope he won’t leave,” Flick said before Bayern’s DFB Pokal final clash with Havertz’s Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday.
Just last week, the Bundesliga-winning coach told Goal that he still has big plans for a player with ‘extraordinary, exceptional quality’.
But Thiago, who joined Bayern under former Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola in 2013, has spent seven years in Germany now.
And, with the 37-time international at the peak of his play-making powers, this feels like the perfect time for him to try something new.
