The game at Goodison Park was something of a stroll from the Toffees, under the captaincy of academy graduate and midfield maestro Ross Barkley.

Barkley, who has started the new season in excellent form, scored Everton’s second goal of the game after Aaron Lennon had scored the opener. Barkley’s replacement Arouna Kone bagged a brace to finish the game.
Barkley’s goal was followed by a poignant celebration from the midfielder.
Blackburn Rovers’ Hope Akpan
Barkley lifted his shirt to show a message paying tribute to the late Sid Benson. Benson passed away recently aged 73 after years of service as a scout at Everton.
Barkley was spotted by Benson at a young age and it is clear his passing resonated with the Everton star.
His action was appreciated by the football world, including from a former player.
Hope Akpan, was with Everton as a youngster until leaving in 2011. Now at Blackburn Rovers he sent this message on Twitter to Barkley today:
It was a class act from a classy young man, on and off the pitch.
No doubt Sid will continue to be made proud by the Everton talent’s progress.
