Michael Owen has backed Everton to survive relegation from the Premier League this season, as they battle it out with the likes of Burnley and Leeds United.

The former Liverpool striker thinks Frank Lampard’s side will need ’38 points to be safe’ and he feels it is doable – they currently have 29 points with six games remaining.

Over the weekend, Everton suffered a costly 2-0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield in the Merseyside derby.

Heading into that game, the Toffees dropped into the bottom three and they still remain there – Burnley’s win against Wolves pushed them into danger.

Nonetheless, this is the verdict Owen provided on Everton’s relegation chances, which fans will love, as he told Premier League Productions.

“I think you have to get about 38 points to be safe,” said Owen. “Everton need three wins out of those six.

“Maybe two wins. Two draws and two defeats, maybe would be okay. I think they can do it, honestly.

“On that performance (against Liverpool), if I was an Everton fan, then I would think ‘we have got hope here’.”

For Everton, they want to make sure they are out of danger by the time they play their final game of the season.

But, in truth, it will probably go down to that final game, which is against Arsenal, so it’s a case of the best-case scenario.

You don’t want to be the team relying upon other results to survive because then you are in serious trouble.

Everton are two points behind Burnley, but their game in hand on the Clarets is very, very important.
