Alexandre Lacazette has admitted that Arsenal fans surprised him last night.
Mikel Arteta’s side cruised into the fourth round of the EFL Cup with a 3-0 win over AFC Wimbledon at the Emirates Stadium.
Considering it was a midweek game against League One opponents, a game that Arsenal were always going to win, the hosts were very well supported nonetheless.
According to the Gunners’ official website, more than 50,000 people turned up to watch the match in person.
And £46 million striker Lacazette, who opened the scoring from the penalty spot, has admitted he didn’t expect such a turnout.
He told the club’s official website: “Honestly I was surprised to see that many fans tonight for the game. We are happy and we enjoy it when they are there. We missed them a lot during the pandemic so now that they are here, we have to give back the confidence that they give us.”
Turning a corner?
Arsenal seem like they have very much turned a corner under Arteta because this was their third victory on the spin.
Remember, Arteta’s side lost their first three Premier League games, conceding nine goals and scoring none as speculation loomed over the Spaniard’s job.
But since then, they have scored five and haven’t conceded any.
That being said, their form needs context because three of those five goals were against a League One side and the other two were against Norwich and Burnley – two teams with one Premier League point between them this season – so it’s still tough to know what to make of the North Londoners.
Sunday’s North London derby with Tottenham will offer a much better barometer of where they are.
