The young defender has been very impressive for Everton recently.
Sam Allardyce is renowned for making his teams defensively resilient, and he has certainly done just that with Everton following his arrival at Goodison Park.
Following their 3-1 victory at home to Swansea City last night, Everton are up to ninth place in the Premier League, while they have only conceded twice in the four league fixtures that they have played since Allardyce took charge.
Prior to Allardyce’s arrival it was widely claimed that a new centre-back was a necessity for Everton in the January transfer window.
However, Allardyce has worked very well with the resources that he has at his disposal, with Mason Holgate having produced some excellent performances at centre-back.
Holgate, who recently signed a new contract with Everton, is capable of playing in either full-back berth, but his recent displays at the heart of the defence have been hugely encouraging.
The England U21 international has frequently made well-timed interceptions, while he has also demonstrated his composure in possession.
In fact, Holgate’s performances have been so impressive that Everton no longer need to bring in a new centre-back in January and can perhaps use the money that was set aside for such a purchase to instead recruit a top quality striker.
Ashley Williams’ form has also improved significantly following Allardyce’s arrival, but Holgate’s displays have been especially impressive and have given Everton one less task to attend to in the transfer window.
