Sunderland have been linked with the 21-year-old this summer.
Former Bolton midfielder Stuart Holden has told ESPN that Sunderland should not make a move for Manchester United starlet Adnan Januzaj.
The 21-year-old winger has been linked with a move to Sunderland as he looks to rebuild his career following a testing couple of years.
He was sent on loan to Borussia Dortmund by Louis van Gaal – who has since been replaced by Jose Mourinho – last season, but managed just six Bundesliga outings.
The season before that, the Belgium international started just seven Premier League games under Van Gaal.
Januzaj won admirerers during the 2013-14 campaign under David Moyes and the Scot wants his former player with him at Sunderland, according to The Mail, which claims United would only be willing to let him leave on a season-long loan.
Sunderland have spent the last few seasons fighting for their Premier League safety, and Holden does not believe a player like Januzaj is suitable to such battles if the Black Cats find themselves in another one under Moyes this season.
“I do not think Sunderland’s the right fit for him,” he told ESPN.
“Playing at the bottom of the Premier League [in] a relegation battle – it’s very physical and a player like Januzaj relies on skill. It’s a tough fit for him.”
Moyes has signed just one player since taking the Sunderland job – defender Papy Djilobodji fo £8 million from Chelsea. Their fans will not want another relegation scrap but, as it stands, is their squad strong enough for a respectable mid-table finish?
Moyes has 21 days in which to bolster his ranks, and he must to do so considerably if Sunderland want this season to be different from the last few.
