Michael Owen told Eric Dier ‘hold your head in shame’ during Tottenham Hotspur’s 2-1 defeat to Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday.

It was Dier’s error, just before the break, that allowed Mo Salah to score his second goal of the game and secure the crucial three points for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The England World Cup hopeful attempted to play a header back to Hugo Lloris, only to run it into the path of the on-rushing Salah, who proceeded to dink the Tottenham keeper and punish the London club.

Tottenham simply weren’t at the races during the first period of the game and they were rightfully 2-0 down – Antonio Conte has heard that story before.

Then, in the second, he introduced Dejan Kulusevski into the action, after his return from injury, and he made an instant impact feeding Harry Kane, who slotted past Alisson Becker in between the sticks.

Despite that strike, it wasn’t enough as Spurs fell to another home defeat in the league and this was Owen’s brief yet brutal words to Dier regarding his error, as he told Premier League Productions (06/11/22 at 5:20 pm).

“Eric Dier, hold your head in shame, unfortunately,” said Owen.

WORLD CUP IS AROUND THE CORNER…

Gareth Southgate is going to name his England squad that will travel to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and Dier, who returned to the set-up in the summer, is expected to be named.

For large parts, under Conte, he has been outstanding and earned his place back into the Three Lions set-up.

But it was just the wrong moment for him to make a mistake when the spotlight is firmly on players trying to push their name forward for England contention.
