The Saints host the Citizens in the Premier League on Sunday with Guardiola’s side in an unfamiliar position of having lost three of their last four.

Southampton midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has highlighted what he feels could have led to Manchester City’s loss in form ahead of their Premier League clash on Sunday.

The Saints host the reigning English champions at St Mary’s but, unusually, Pep Guardiola’s charges are in a position where they will be desperate to get a result.

Last season, the Citizens appeared indomitable but they go to the south coast on the back of two consecutive league defeats, against Crystal Palace and Leicester City, for a total of three in four including the Chelsea loss.

Southampton captain Hojbjerg played under Guardiola at Bayern Munich so will have a decent enough idea of what Sunday’s opposition manager is like and what makes him tick.

In an interview with The Times, the Denmark international suggested that the Spaniard’s intensity and obsessive attention to detail is a double-edged sword that may be going against him now.

“He is the most demanding person, not only coach, that I have ever met,” said Hojbjerg.

“We sit on the bus after we have won and he sits on the bus watching the game and then he is in his office with two laptops and a television and he is analysing.

“Maybe that’s what makes him the greatest.. but also maybe that is what makes him lose, because it is too much, he drowns.”

According to BBC Sport, Southampton have won just one of their last 11 Premier League meetings with Manchester City, while the visitors will be looking to win five in a row against Saints in the Premier League for the first time.
