Roy Hodgson has been speaking to the media ahead of Crystal Palace’s trip to Molineux tomorrow evening, where they’ll take on Wolves.
While discussing a number of topics, the former England boss had some special words of praise for Jaïro Riedewald, who scored the opener against Fulham last time out.
As quoted by the club’s official Twitter account, Hodgson said: ‘I wouldn’t be surprised to see Jaïro picked for Holland. He deserves a lot of praise for how he’s performed.’
Of course, the Netherlands national team is managed by former Eagles boss Frank de Boer.
It was the ex-Ajax manager who brought Riedewald to south London, parting with £7.9 million of his budget to bring the Dutchman to Selhurst Park.
Unfortunately for both player and manager, De Boer lasted just 77 days in SE25 (Sky Sports), and Hodgson initially didn’t fancy using Riedewald that much.
The 73-year-old didn’t hand the No.44 a single second of Premier League action in the 2018/19 campaign.
It should be noted that the midfielder was neither injured or being disciplined in any way.
In that respect, Riedewald deserves credit for working his way into Hodgson’s thinking after things looked pretty bleak.
For him to receive a call-up to the Netherlands squad to play alongside the likes of Frenkie de Jong, Georginio Wijnaldum and Memphis Depay would certainly represent some rise.
