Glenn Hoddle has suggested to The London Evening Standard that Jose Mourinho cannot drop Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Hugo Lloris because there is not good cover for him.
The Tottenham legend believes that goalkeeper Lloris has not been playing well for the past four or five months.
Hoddle has said that Spurs need to replace Lloris in the long term, but he does not think that head coach Mourinho can simply drop him now.
Joe Hart is the back-up goalkeeper at Spurs, but the Englishman, like Lloris, is prone to making mistakes and is now 33 years of age.
Hoddle told The London Evening Standard: “I have not felt Lloris has been that safe for probably about four or five months if I am honest. I think he is on the back foot, his intent is not there to take crosses, for me he looks like he is doubting himself a little bit.
“I really do believe that long-term Spurs need to replace him at some stage, and sooner than most people would imagine. But dropping him? I am not sure we have got the cover there at the moment. Joe Hart comes in for Europa League games but I am not sure is ready to play back-to-back games.”
Need to replace Hugo Lloris
Lloris has made some costly errors for Tottenham in recent years, including the one against Manchester City at the weekend.
True, the Frenchman is very experienced and makes some wonderful saves, but there is an argument to be made that he is past his prime.
After all, Lloris is 34 years of age now. It would make sense for Spurs to start looking for a replacement, a younger player who can come in for next season and beyond and give him genuine competition.
