Hoddle: I can’t get my head around this West Ham decision

West Ham face Watford on Sunday in David Moyes’ first match in charge.

Former England manager Glenn Hoddle has told Yahoo Sport’s In On Goal that he is exasperated at West Ham United’s decision to hand David Moyes a six-month contract.

Former Everton, Manchester United and Sunderland manager Moyes joined the Hammers during the international break, less than 24 hours after the east Londoners opted to sack Slaven Bilic.

Scottish boss Moyes joins the club with the Hammers sitting in the relegation zone, after their abysmal 4-1 loss to Liverpool last time out at the London Stadium in what was Bilic’s last match in charge.

Ex-Tottenham Hotspur player and manager Hoddle claimed he cannot understand why Moyes’ contract is so short and predicted West Ham to go out and look to earn a point against Watford on Sunday.

“West Ham fans – they aren’t happy with David Moyes,” Hoddle said. “But it is a six-month deal and I can’t get my head around that.

“If I was Moyes, I would have wanted more continuity than that. Soon as he starts winning football matches, West Ham fans will change their minds. It’s all about results. If they start seeing a difference, they’ll go ‘hang on a minute, he might be the man’.

“He’ll go in there [Vicarage Road] and try to get a point, and slowly build on something.”

West Ham have been hit with a number of injuries ahead of the clash, with the latest casualty being Mexico international Javier Hernandez who has suffered a muscle injury while on international duty.

Three points and just a third league win of the season for West Ham would get Moyes off to the perfect start, and could even see them leap up to 14th in the league table if Everton, Stoke, Bournemouth and West Brom all drop points.
