Glenn Hoddle told the Kelly and Wrighty show that Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is ‘essential’ to Tottenham’s style of play under Jose Mourinho.

When Hojbjerg moved to North London from the South Coast in the summer, a lot of eyebrows were raised because the Denmark international wasn’t the flair signing that many wanted.

The last Dane to wow the Spurs faithful was technically-gifted, he could break the lines and was a master at scoring wonder goals.

But it does seem as though many underestimated, not only the talents of Hojbjerg but the eagle-eye of Mourinho who knew exactly what he was looking for when he snapped him up.

Whilst Hojbjerg is a completely different player to Christian Eriksen, he has got a combative nature to his game, and whilst his international teammate dominates in the attacking third, he bosses opposition players about in the defensive third.

Nonetheless, this is what Hoddle had to say about Hojbjerg, who has played 18 games for Spurs and will be hoping his 19th tonight, will result in him netting his first goal for the club.

Tottenham Hotspur’s summer signings

  1. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

    £15 million; Southampton

  2. Joe Hart

  3. Matt Doherty

    £13 million; Wolves

  4. Sergio Reguilon

    £25 million; Real Madrid

  5. Gareth Bale

    Loan; Real Madrid

  6. Carlos Vinicius

    Loan; Benfica

  7. Joe Rodon

    £12 million; Swansea

“Hojbjerg is essential to Jose’s style of play,” said Hoddle. “I think Jose’s defensively-wise he is doing what he has done with every other club.

“And silverware has come with every other club he’s been with. So, it’s a positive set for Tottenham, it really is.”

There’s no doubt that Hojbjerg is up there as one of the signings of the summer and a player that deserves more respect to his name.

Alongside, the more attack-minded Tanguy Ndombele, both players have brought back that bite and aggression to Tottenham’s midfield, which has been missing ever since Victor Wanyama and Mousa Dembele were sold.
