Sunderland fans have taken to Twitter to react after Denver Hume signed a new two-year contract at the Stadium of Light.
What’s the story?
Well, the saga is finally over. After a summer of will he, won’t he, Hume has now put pen to paper on fresh terms.
As the Northern Echo revealed, the 23-year-old rejected Sunderland’s offer of a new contract in August.
Sporting Director Kristjaan Speakman believed it was a good offer, as did Lee Johnson, although it wasn’t signed.
However, now the transfer window has closed, the left-back has committed his future to the Black Cats – the timing is definitely strange.
You can understand why some Sunderland fans below are a bit annoyed at this news.
Did Denver Hume want to stay at Sunderland?
It’s certainly fair to ask if Hume even wanted to stay on Wearside.
He was happy to be a free agent all summer, but has only decided to sign the contract offer now the window has closed and the season is starting.
In our view, it sounds like Hume was holding out for a better offer, although it would be unfair to make that claim without knowing the full details.
Nevertheless, the Northumberland-born defender now has a task on his hands.
For a start, he must win back the supporters who also believe he was hoping to move elsewhere.
Then, he must compete with Dennis Cirkin, an excellent left-back who joined from Tottenham earlier this summer.
José Mourinho even called him ‘fantastic‘ on one occasion.
