Former Wolves player Andy Thompson says their rivals are desperate

Wolverhampton Wanderers legend Andy Thompson believes their nearest rivals are desperate to knock Wolves off their perch.

As reported by Express & Star, Wolverhampton Wanderers legend Andy Thompson has commented on how desperate the clubs around Wolves are getting as they approach the business end of the Championship season.

Thompson, known affectionately as ‘Thommo’ by the Molineux faithful, moved to the club back in 1986 alongside fellow fan favourite Steve Bull. The duo were able to produce magic together, with Thompson remaining at the club for 11 years before moving on to the likes of Tranmere Rovers and Cardiff City.

In the present day, he remains a fond member of the Wolves family, and he had the following to say when discussing the club’s promotion surge.

“With the way we’ve recruited and the plaudits we’ve been getting, teams are desperate to shoot you down,” he said.

“There’s still 15 games to go and that’s a good chunk of games. Nuno will not let the team get carried away.”

Regardless of how different the club looks now in comparison to five or ten years ago, the majority of fans have stuck by the current system which has seen Wolves reach heights that few could have anticipated this early in the process.

Throughout Thompson’s time in the Black Country he never quite managed to see them rise into the Premier League, with two play-offs coming in the 1990s. With that being said, he was an integral part of helping Wolves gain back-to-back promotions after they had initially fallen down into the Fourth Division.

While Thompson used the term ‘desperate’ to describe the teams around the old gold & black, it actually seems as if they are starting to build some real momentum as of late. The likes of Aston Villa and Cardiff City have squads that are more than capable of cutting the gap at the top, while Derby County and Fulham will be looking to bounce back from recent slips.

Of course, it is all dependant on whether or not Wolves can keep up their strong run of form and, based on recent evidence, there could be a promotion party coming sooner rather than later.
