Nuno Espirito Santo has been making the headlines yet again for Wolves.
Nobody can deny that Nuno Espirito Santo is one of the most passionate managers in football right now, and following Wolves’ victory over promotion rivals Cardiff City, he proved that once again – to the annoyance of Neil Warnock.
Nuno’s celebrations after the triumph were deemed to be ‘unprofessional’ by some, with Warnock showcasing his frustrations with a series of expletives. Now whether you agree with the veteran boss or not, there’s a layer of truth hidden in what he’s saying, even if you have to dig quite far in order to find it.
This isn’t the first time the Portuguese gaffer has been pulled up for letting his emotions get the better of him, and it certainly won’t be the last. He’s been disciplined on more than one occasion in the Championship this season, but thankfully, Wolves have always been able to bounce back courtesy of their overwhelming quality from top to bottom.
Moving forward, however, Nuno needs to find a way to calm himself down on the touchline – because that kind of behaviour could end up costing him once he gets to the big time.
Firstly, there’s a good chance it’ll affect his reputation on a larger scale due to more eyes being on him, and secondly the impact of not having your boss looking on is something that’s often understated. It’s not like he’s out of control or anything like that, but even the slightest overreaction to a bad decision could be taken the wrong way in the top flight.
From a PR perspective they’ve been able to get away with it up until this point largely because, in truth, Nuno’s charisma has been so infectious. Unfortunately that can only take you so far, and this latest ordeal with Warnock should serve as a warning.
Their attention will turn back towards securing promotion this week when they host Derby County at Molineux.
