Why Wolves’ summer transfer window could be unique

Wolverhampton Wanderers find themselves in an odd position heading into the summer transfer window.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have one of the best squads in the history of the Championship and, because of that, it will be interesting to see how they cope with the summer transfer window.

As you can imagine Wolves fans’ expectations are now sky high regarding transfers, following a 12-month period that has seen them beat out some of Europe’s finest to secure the signatures of top young talent from around the continent and beyond.

Because of that, if the club does in fact gain promotion back to the Premier League, there is likely to be a great deal of pressure on their shoulders. While supporters should realistically expect some kind of development, we have to question whether or not they would need that much strengthening.

Over the years we have often seen a pattern develop when it comes to the three teams that gain promotion to the top flight. They weed out solid Championship players who are not considered be good enough for the next level, meanwhile, they bring in a selection of unknown foreigners who have not proved themselves in England.

For Wolves, though, it could wind up being just the opposite. Around 80 per cent of their squad is more than good enough to contend with some of the top clubs in the Premier League already, and they have had a season to embed themselves into the English system. With that in mind, it is actually quite worrying for the club to consider the possibility of even bigger teams swooping in and taking those players.

Plus, with a number of them likely being off to the World Cup in the summer, their stock could rise even higher.

Wolves are going to have to be extremely tactical when it comes to holding on to their current crop of stars, while simultaneously bringing in bigger names who are not going to upset the established order. They need to get it just right, otherwise the Molineux faithful could go into the campaign with concern rather than elation.
