Why Wolves’ next two games will be promotion flashbacks

Wolverhampton Wanderers are set to face two familiar foes as they continue their promotion push.

When you are on the verge of returning to the Premier League for the first time in six years, you shouldn’t really require any extra motivation in order to push forward with your promotion charge.

With that being said, there are some circumstances where fate intervenes and decides to gift you an opportunity; which just so happens to be the case for Wolverhampton Wanderers in their next two games.

As we have already alluded to it seems like Wolves will be heading into the top flight with relative ease at some point over the next few months, as they hold a healthy 12-point advantage over third place Aston Villa. Still, it is nice to put into perspective what it is you are aiming for, which is why facing Sheffield United and Queens Park Rangers will be more important for the Midlands side than anyone could possibly fathom.

These two sides played a key role in Wolves’ last two promotions to the Premier League. While that may not have too much historical meaning for any other fan of any other clubs, the Molineux faithful are a nostalgic bunch.

The first example of the two came back in May 2003, when Wanderers squared off against Sheffield United at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium in the Championship Playoff Final. It was always meant to be a close game given how historic both of their campaigns were, but in the end, Dave Jones led Wolves to a convincing 3-0 victory which saw them confirm their return to the big time.

Then, if you fast forward six years later, they were in a slightly less stressful position when they hosted Queens Park Rangers at Molineux in a league game that would have confirmed promotion with a few games left to spare.

A solo strike from Sylvan Ebanks-Blake got the party started, as Wolves managed to ease towards the Championship title and a place among England’s elite.

Now obviously things are going to be a lot different this time around, and Wolves are still a few months away from securing promotion, but you can bet that the fans in attendance over the next few weeks won’t have forgotten about those famous nights.
