Something that has always been lingering in the darkness this season is Wolverhampton Wanderers’ many loan deals and, more specifically, how they are going to deal with them once the 2017/18 campaign comes to an end.

While the club have been able to loan out the equivalent of three starting XIs since August, the focus here will be the players they brought into the squad as opposed to sent out. Their transfer policy, in addition to their position in the second tier of English football, was always going to make it difficult for permanent deals to be confirmed, and as such Wolves have got some high profile names on the loan list.

Willy Boly, Ruben Vinagre, Alfred N’Diaye, Benik Afobe and Leo Bonatini will all see their deals expire in June, meaning that the next few months are going to be crucial for Nuno Espirito Santo to say the least.

Those five players represent the core of Wolverhampton Wanderers’ success this season, with Bonatini’s early form, Afobe’s recent form and Boly’s abilities at the back all being examples of just how effective these stars have been at Molineux.

It is clear to see that there has been a strong bond formed between this squad and the manager throughout the season, but it will be interesting to see just how strong it will be when the offers start coming in from bigger clubs. Promotion to the top flight will certainly give Wolves even more appeal, but there is no guarantee of a starting place in their minds given how much money they will have to spend in the summer.

While it is exciting to consider who could be brought in over the next few months, these loan deals need to be the priority. These players understand the system, have performed efficiently whenever they have been called upon, and it would allow Wolves to build on their strength in depth given that there is already bound to be a huge exodus of fringe talent.
