Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal has been linked with a surprise move to Anfield.
Liverpool are currently enjoying one of their best runs in years, as they continue to compete not only for a spot in the top four of the Premier League but are also in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League.
Under the guidance of Jurgen Klopp not only have they improved as a unit, but they have also improved when it comes to attracting high profile names to Anfield.
Bar one year at Bayer Leverkusen, the 26-year-old has spent his full career at the Bernabeu, and given that he has grown up within the system, you have to consider the possibility of him remaining at the club for the rest of his career. After all, it is no secret that Liverpool would be a bit of a step down for him, with Real having captured the European Cup in three of the last four seasons.
On top of that, Liverpool already have plenty of options at right back. Nathaniel Clyne, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez all either excel in that position or are more than capable of doing a job.
When the Reds splashed out millions on Virgil van Dijk, it was a decision that was not universally agreed with, but it was a necessary thing to do. Liverpool have been without world-class centre-backs for what feels like an eternity, and they need to be taking these kinds of gambles if they want to keep competing with the big boys.
However, when you have got a release clause that is almost triple the amount of the current world record fee, it starts to seem a like a move for Carvajal would not be worth the effort.
There is nothing wrong with heading back out into the market for Liverpool, especially if they want to contend for the Premier League title next season, but they need to be thinking differently about this. Klopp is really starting to build something at Anfield, and even if this is just an elaborate rumour, they need to distance themselves from it as soon as possible.
