Wolves fans are looking forward to what is sure to be a hectic few months.
Wolverhampton Wanderers are set to enter a very busy period leading up to the 2018/19 season, as they move closer and closer towards an impending return to the Premier League after more than six years away.
Their form this season has been, largely, due to their unbelievable transfer dealings over the last 18 months – and now that they’re set to return to the top flight, that looks set to continue. The club have the finances to make some serious waves throughout the footballing world, but when you look at their squad, the question remains as to which positions are most in need of salvation.
Starting off in goal, you’d expect Wolves to focus on other areas of the pitch, especially given that they’ve actually got a few handy options in this position for once. John Ruddy has struggled at points this season but has still done enough to keep his spot, and with Will Norris and Harry Burgoyne waiting in the wings, their money would be best spent elsewhere.
At the back there are certainly some capable players in the ranks, but not necessarily at a Premier League level. Wolves will try their hardest to keep Willy Boly on the books, and they’ve certainly got stars in Barry Douglas and Matt Doherty who are willing to put it all on the line in the name of helping the team succeed – be that in defence or in a more forward pressing position.
Bennett and Coady are central figures in the backline and have been for a while now with Batth also contributing, but it seems as if they could use an experienced Premier League veteran who can calm things down in times of trouble. With that in mind, don’t be surprised to see Wolves fill that void in the early stages of the summer.
The aforementioned Doherty and Douglas are handy options on the wing but if Wolves want to change up their shape heading into a PL campaign, bringing in one or two pacey wingers from high profile clubs is something that should be anticipated towards the back end of the window. In central midfield, however, they’re well covered with superstar Ruben Neves, Romain Saiss, Alfred N’Diaye and Morgan Gibbs-White all thriving right now.
Finally, up front, Benik Afobe is finally starting to show signs of brilliance with Helder Costa, Ivan Cavaleiro and Diogo Jota all looking like stars alongside him. The addition of one more natural forward certainly wouldn’t hurt, especially given that Afobe hasn’t had the best of luck at a higher level.
