West Bromwich Albion midfielder James McClean has set himself a target of hitting double figures in terms of goals this season.
West Bromwich Albion winger James McClean has stated that he wants to reward the Baggies fans that have stuck by him by hitting double figures in terms of goals this season, as reported by the Express & Star.
Over the last few years McClean has done a number of things that have riled fans up and down the country. From refusing to wear a poppy to turning his back on the national anthem, many people love to hate the West Brom midfielder despite his obvious talent. The 27-year-old has not let this affect him however, insisting that the boos spur him on.
He is currently enjoying a good little run of form when it comes to scoring after bagging a brace for the Republic of Ireland during the international break, and the midfielder realises that some of the burden needs to be taken off of striker Salomon Rondon.
He said, via the Express & Star: “Being a wide player it’s very important to try and get as many goals and assists as possible. It was a good week away with Ireland, we got two wins, I managed to get a couple of goals. Hopefully I can carry that on.
“Every season you hope to hit double figures. I haven’t managed that yet but I’ve got a few goals and it’s early in the season, so if I get a few more hopefully I can hit that target.
“You need as many players as possible scoring goals. We’ve got a lot of good players in the squad. We need to take the burden off Salomon so if me, Nacer (Chadli), Matty (Phillips), (Darren) Fletcher and any other midfielders can chip in as well then it bodes well.”
Whether or not he will hit that target remains to be seen, but his determination on the pitch as well as his ability to stay composed in the face of adversity is something that cannot be denied.
Regardless of your opinion of him, McClean will continue to do his best to ensure the strongest possible future for his club and country.
