There was widespread disappointment from Scotland fans who issued a collective sigh when their side could only manage a draw with lowly Lithuania. It put a dent in their World Cup aspirations despite still being in a good position, as the morale of the squad is bound to be affected by the result. As reported by The Star, Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Barry Bannan refuses to give up on his dreams of helping Scotland reach the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Bannan played well at Hampden Park, but as has been the case so often in their history Scotland were not able to get the job done.

“We are disappointed. Beforehand, you go into that Lithuania game wanting to win it and we didn’t. The important thing is to try and take the positives that we can,” said Bannan.

“We managed to secure a point from the match when it looked like we might get nothing and the results in the other matches have worked in our favour.

“At this point, we are in the second in the group and going into a massive match on Tuesday. The group is going to be full of ups and downs.”

Scotland manager Gordon Strachan

The match that the 26-year-old is referring to takes place tonight when Scotland take on Slovakia where a victory would get their Russia hopes right back on track.

The national team have not made it to a World Cup since 1998, and throughout their entire history they have been unable to make it past the group stage.
