Wolves manager Walter Zenga has said that the mistakes his side made led to their defeat at the hands of Newcastle in the League Cup last night.
In what many Newcastle United fans will consider revenge, the Magpies defeated Wolves 2-0 at St. James’ Park last night to progress into the next round of the League Cup. The result comes just days after Zenga’s men inflicted the same result on their North East opponents, and as reported by the Express & Star the Italian feels that certain mistakes let his side down in the game.
“We make a big gift in one minute and the game was over in that minute,” he said. “Our two mistakes in defensive situation…when you make gifts in this way it’s difficult to come back into the game.
“Then in the second half we had more to open the game, but unfortunately we didn’t score.”
Newcastle were all over Wolves for long spells of the game, however the visitors did have good chances late in the second half through Paul Gladon and Ola John.
It is yet another disappointing cup exit to go alongside the many that the club have racked up over the years, as a good cup run in either domestic competition has eluded them for nearly two decades now.
The Midlands side will have to brush themselves down and prepare for the visit of in-form Brentford, who look like they could be set to make another run at the playoffs.
