Wolverhampton Wanderers have been in this position before, and there are a few key similarities to their successful 2008/09 promotion run.

Wolverhampton Wanderers are on the verge of gaining promotion back to the Premier League, which is a feat they have not managed since their memorable 2008/09 Championship winning campaign.

Some would argue that the two sets of squads are relatively different nine years on, but in others, there are a handful of similarities which could bring back nostalgic memories for the Molineux faithful.

Loan Dealings

In both seasons Wolves had bigger squads than most other teams in the league heading into the campaign, meaning they were required to ship a few of them out on loan to other teams.

Back in 2008/09, they sent a staggering 18 players away for some playing time, meanwhile this season they upped that figure to 19. Following promotion, they wound up releasing many of the aforementioned players, which could be a sign of things to come if they make it back to the promised land.

Manager Style

With both Mick McCarthy and Nuno Espirito Santo, you have got managers who are anything but conventional. Despite having incredibly different upbringings, they have got the same no-nonsense attitudes, which is probably why they are so loved by supporters.

So often in the present day, the bosses of big clubs cannot bring themselves to say what they think, but that was never an issue with these two. Plus, they were not afraid to experiment when things were not quite going their way.

Consistency

Throughout both 2008/09 and 2017/18, the consistency of Wolverhampton Wanderers has led to overwhelmingly positive results. Back in their last promotion season Wolves were able to maintain their place within the top two or three for the entirety of the campaign, rarely showing any weaknesses.

At the same time, Wolves have been unstoppable throughout most of the Championship season this year, while managing to keep their cool in the face of any poor results.
