Over the years there have been plenty of thrashings in the Premier League, however these three results really grabbed the headlines.

It is a pretty humiliating moment when your side gets absolutely smashed over the course of 90 minutes, whether that is in a Sunday League game or the top flight of English football. Regardless of the setting, heavy defeats take a while to get over and these ones in particular will still make the losing fans shudder to this day.
1) Manchester United 9-0 Ipswich Town, 1995
Back in 1995, Sir Alex Ferguson’s men were chasing down Blackburn Rovers in an attempt to once again lift the Premier League title. Their next challenge was the visit of Ipswich Town who, despite being in the relegation zone, were confident of securing a result considering they had already beaten United earlier in the season.

But lightning didn’t strike twice. The Red Devils absolutely butchered the Tractor Boys 9-0 with Andy Cole netting five goals in addition to strikes from Mark Hughes, Paul Ince and Roy Keane. It was an absolute battering and to this day it remains the biggest win in Premier League history.
2) Tottenham Hotspur 9-1 Wigan Athletic, 2009
Courtesy of being the only other team to score nine goals in a match, Tottenham take this spot ahead of anyone else. During this season Harry Redknapp was attempting to guide Spurs to the Champions League and it was in this game that they broke into the top four.

Astonishingly the game was only 1-0 at half time thanks to Peter Crouch’s strike, but the next 45 minutes would prove to be hell on earth for Wigan fans. Jermain Defoe hit five with Aaron Lennon, Niko Kranjcar and David Bentley compiling the Latics’ misery.
3) Newcastle United 8-0 Sheffield Wednesday, 1999
Despite Chelsea winning 8-0 on a number of occasions over the years, third place goes to Newcastle as they accomplished the goal first way back in 1999. The contest was Sir Bobby Robson’s first home game in charge at St James’ Park following the resignation of Ruud Gullit.

It was quite the introduction as the Magpies decimated Wednesday with five goals from Alan Shearer and one apiece from Aaron Hughes, Kieron Dyer and Gary Speed. It was a monumental day that sparked a new era at the club with Sir Bobby leading the way.
