Patrick van Aanholt was removed from Sunderland’s starting line-up at the weekend just 30 minutes before kick off due to advice from cardiologists.
There was much confusion surrounding Patrick van Aanholt at the weekend after he was withdrawn from his side’s starting line-up just 30 minutes before kick-off. As reported by The Guardian, Sunderland manager David Moyes has confirmed that the Dutchman was taken out of the squad following the results from his heart tests.
“He had the statutory checks with the cardiologists and the FA panel of cardiologists looked at it and advised us really late on Sunday that he should not play until further tests had taken place.” said Moyes.
“We are just surprised that the FA panel didn’t contact me or contact my doctor until 3.55pm on Sunday afternoon. I have never in my career been put in a situation like that ever, so we had that to deal with.”
Van Aanholt has reportedly had further testing and is set to travel with the rest of the squad to London for their EFL Cup tie against Queens Park Rangers on Wednesday. The goal-scoring defender will hope that this does not derail his campaign, as the 26-year-old is set to play an important role in Moyes’ setup this season.
It is another piece of bad news in a season full of it for Sunderland, who currently find themselves in 19th after the first five league games of the season. The Black Cats are known for being slow starters, but fans will start to worry if the win-less streak continues into October under new manager Moyes.
