It has not been the start to the season that Derby County fans expected, as their side lie in the bottom half of the Championship table.

Derby's manager Nigel Pearson

For a few years now Derby County have been on the verge of promotion to the Premier League, but have never been able to take that next step. With the appointment of Nigel Pearson fans were hoping that they could finally make their return to the top flight, but as we approach October things have not worked out as well as they would have hoped.

Blackburn Rovers manager Owen Coyle

Blackburn – Home

If there was ever a game that needed to come in order to get Derby back on track, this might be it. Blackburn have experienced a poor start to the season and despite finally getting a win under their belts, this must be seen as a huge opportunity for Derby to really kick start their campaign.

The problem is that if the game goes on for too long without a goal, the crowd at the iPro are likely to let the players know what they think about it. If the Rams can keep their composure, a much required narrow victory is within reach.

Prediction: Derby 1-0 Blackburn

Cardiff City manager Paul Trollope

Cardiff – Away

Two games in three days could prove to be tricky for Pearson’s men, but luckily those games will come against two of the worst sides in the division. Cardiff have also experienced a diabolical start to the season and Derby will know that, as the fixture list continues to be kind to them.

It will likely be a scrappy affair and do not be surprised to see a red card come out, but the visitors should have the ability to once again edge past the Bluebirds with a nervy victory.

Prediction: Cardiff 0-1 Derby

Reading manager Jaap Stam

Reading – Away

With Jaap Stam now at the helm Reading have made a steady start to the season as they find themselves in eighth after eight league games. The Madjeski will likely become a tough place to visit as the year goes on, however if Derby can indeed rack up back-to-back wins against Blackburn and Cardiff then they will have much more confidence going into this game.

If they can avoid conceding early and frustrate the Royals as the half goes on then anything could happen, with a score draw being a real possibility.

Prediction: Reading 1-1 Derby
